EcoNatura Romania was founded in 1998 when a group of five passionate biologists and ecologists, led by Dr. Mircea Popescu, came together to protect Romania's fragile ecosystems. At that time, following the post-communist transition, the country's natural environment faced unprecedented threats: uncontrolled logging, urban and industrial expansion, and the abandonment of traditional agricultural practices.
Our first projects focused on scientifically documenting high-biodiversity areas and educating local communities about the importance of their conservation. We started with limited resources—a small office in Cluj-Napoca and a team of dedicated volunteers—but with a strong vision for the future.
Over the years, the organization gradually grew, implementing conservation projects in the Carpathians, the Danube Delta, and other key ecosystems. Today, EcoNatura is nationally and internationally recognized for its holistic approach and concrete results in protecting Romania's natural heritage.
The principles guiding our work and inspiring each project.
We protect Romania's natural ecosystems and native species, ensuring their long-term conservation for future generations.
We believe in the power of education to change attitudes and behaviors. We develop innovative programs to inspire a love for nature.
We engage local communities in all our projects, building sustainable partnerships based on respect and mutual benefits.
We aspire to a Romania where wilderness thrives in harmony with human development. Where old-growth forests continue to shelter the rich Carpathian wildlife, wetlands support unique biodiversity, and local communities harness natural heritage through sustainable practices.
We work towards a country that protects its natural resources not only through laws and regulations but also through widespread public awareness of the priceless value of these ecosystems. We believe in a future where nature conservation is integrated into all policies and economic decisions, making Romania a European model of sustainable development.
Dedicated professionals working every day to protect Romania's nature.
